precision tooling design

Why Precision Tooling Design Reviews Are Important

The precision tooling design is critical to the success of your tooling and products. Tooling is critical to ensuring your products are manufactured and assembled correctly so they function exactly as expected.

Many manufacturers will perform a precision tooling design review internally or rely on their tooling maker to ensure that the way your tooling is designed is conducive to the manufacturing process. We will explore what the precision tooling design process is and why precision tooling design reviews are so important.

What is Precision Tooling?

Precision tooling in this context is a fixture that is typically used to form some type of holding, insertion, assembly, or other function to a sub-assembly of a larger assembly or even the final assembly itself. This type of tooling is commonly used in critical industries, such as aerospace, automotive, and defense sectors.

Precision Tooling Design Process

Customers design precision tooling based on the desired functionality — such as holding, insertion, assembly, or another function.  Once your product is designed, a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software is used to create 2D and 3D models of your product to give your manufacturer all of the information they need to properly create your tooling.

From here, an internal design review will take place and any changes that need to be made are discussed and completed. CADs are then used by a CNC programmer to enter instructions into the Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software, which converts the instructions into a machine-readable code. The CNC machine is then loaded with the code and manufacturing can begin.

What Are Precision Tooling Design Reviews and Why Are They Important?

Review to Ensure Design for Manufacturability

Design for Manufacturability (DFM) is the optimization of a part, product, or component design to make the manufacturing process easier and more cost-effective. When reviewing the designs for your tooling, your manufacturer will take DFM into consideration so any changes can be made before production.

Saves You Time

With a DFM review, your manufacturer will ensure that your product is able to be easily and efficiently manufactured. This will also reduce the risk of problems arising during production, resulting in less time spent manufacturing products incorrectly or inefficiently.

Saves Money

Since your manufacturer will make sure that your product can be manufactured efficiently and correctly with your chosen machining processes, you will reduce the amount of money you will spend on manufacturing. This is in part due to the fact that your production process will take less time and labor, and that you will be limiting the mistakes made during the production process so you don’t have to worry about replacing damaged products.
