How CNC Aerospace Machining Can Benefit Your Project

The aerospace industry requires precision parts for air and spacecraft to function safely and efficiently. CNC aerospace machining is a crucial manufacturing process used to create these precision parts. This process provides extreme accuracy and can create precision parts with extremely tight tolerances expected by the aerospace industry. Let’s explore the benefits and process of CNC aerospace machining.

What is CNC Aerospace Machining?

CNC aerospace machining is a highly accurate manufacturing process where pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery. This ensures precision in the manufacturing process, creating parts with tight tolerances that are highly repeatable.

At Garland Service Company, we use two CNC machining methods to create precision aerospace parts.

  • CNC Milling: During this process, a workpiece is mounted and rotating tools are used to remove material, creating the precision part you require.
    • 3-Axis: The cutting tools move along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes to shape the part as the tools move. This is commonly used to cut sharp edges, drill holes, and perform boring and tapping operations.
    • 4-Axis: The cutting tools move along the X-, Y-, Z, and A-axes to cut holes, cut along the arc, carve cut-outs on cylinders, and perform precision engravings, milling, and drilling operations.
    • 5-Axis: The tools move in two different directions, translation and rotation. They move via translation along the X-, Y-, Z-axes and via rotation along the A- and C-axes to create highly precise products and parts.
  • CNC Turning: During CNC turning, a stationary tool removes parts of the work material as it is rapidly rotated around the tools. This process is used to create products with complex designs.

Benefits of CNC Aerospace Machining

Produces Lightweight Components

CNC aerospace machining can fabricate lightweight precision parts efficiently. This helps to reduce the overall weight of the craft, enhancing fuel efficiency and performance. Not only are these parts lightweight and meet tolerance requirements, but they are also still extremely durable.

Reduces Part Errors

CNC machining utilizes pre-programmed computers, reducing errors in parts production. These machines create precision parts with extremely tight tolerances. By creating parts that meet tolerance requirements, the risk of part failure is reduced, and the safety and reliability of the parts are enhanced.

Highly Accurate and Repeatable

CNC machining reduces the risk of human error, producing precision parts that meet exact specifications and tolerances. In the aerospace industry, these parts need to be able to withstand extreme conditions and stresses, making highly accurate parts critical to engines and structural components.

The computer program can be used repeatedly to produce the exact same part. And, since the process doesn’t rely on humans, it can be completed the exact same way over and over. Combined, CNC machining allows you to maintain quality through a highly repeatable process.

Efficient Product Process

The CNC machining process utilizes automation, allowing for continuous operation. By continually operating, the manufacturer is able to produce a large volume of product in a short period of time, reducing product and time costs.

Complex Designs

CNC machines can be used to create precision parts with complex, highly intricate designs. This process allows you great design flexibility to create the exact product you want and need while still meeting tight tolerances and being repeatable.
