Precision CNC Machining Services: What Are They and What Are They Used For?

Precision CNC machining services are used to create precision parts for many critical industries, such as aerospace, defense, automotive, and more. The process involves using a Computer Numerical Control machine to manufacture precision parts through their tooling.

During the process, the machine is fed a machine-learning language that tells the machine what parts to remove from the workpiece to create the desired parts. In this blog, we will explore the different precision CNC machining services offered, what industries they are typically used in, and what they are typically used to create.

Common Precision CNC Machining Services

CNC Milling

CNC milling creates parts by mounting the work material and using a rotating tool to remove material from the workpiece, thus creating the tool. There are three common types of CNC milling — 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis.

  • 3-Axis Milling: Cutting tools move along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes, shaping the tool as it moves. This process is typically used to cut sharp edges, drill holes, and perform boring and tapping operations.
  • 4-Axis Milling: The tools work to remove material along the X-, Y-, Z-, and A-axes. This milling technique cuts holes, cuts along the arc, carves cut-outs on cylinders, and does precision engravings, milling, and drilling.
  • 5-Axis Milling: Tooling moves in two different directions — via translation along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes and rotation along the A- and C-axes. This process is used to create highly precise products and parts.

CNC Turning

During CNC turning, the workpiece is mounted and rotated rapidly while stationary tools remove parts of the material to create the desired part, product, or tool. There are two common types of CNC turning used:

  • Swiss Lathe: This process uses a collet and guide busing to hold stock material in place as it is turned. The material is extremely secure, meaning it is less likely to vibrate during manufacturing, thus being possible to create thinner, precise, intricate parts with tight tolerances.
  • CNC Lathe: This turning process is significantly more accurate than manual, conventional lathes and are suitable for creating products with complex designs.

Industries That Benefit From Precision CNC Machining Services

Aerospace

Since aerospace components encounter extreme environments, precision parts are crucial for the success and safety of the craft and crew. Aerospace CNC machined products must meet the incredibly tight tolerances and use specific industry-standard materials like titanium and aluminum.

Defense

The defense industry requires durable parts that can withstand the harshest conditions. From intense use to hot and cold environments, these products need to be able to hold up in a wide range of environments. The government sets strict standards for military products, including CNC machined parts. Manufacturers must know the exact standards and process of part production and CNC machining allows us to do so.

Automotive

Vehicle manufacturers need to ensure their parts are safe and functional. CNC machining allows tooling for precision parts to be manufactured with tight tolerances and ease of repeatability.

Products That Are Produced Through Precision CNC Machining Services

Many different products can be produced through precision CNC machining services. Let’s explore them by industry:

  • Aerospace: Some of the products created through CNC machining include manifolds, airfoils, bushings, electrical connectors, landing gear parts, and antennae.
  • Defense: CNC machined products include communications components, transportation components, electronics, and aircraft parts.
  • Automotive: Products created through CNC machining include brakes, engine parts, and tooling.
