How Precision Metal Parts Benefit Critical Industries

Precision metal parts are used in a wide range of industries, including critical ones such as aerospace, defense, and automotive sectors. These parts provide many benefits to these industries, including improved efficiency and safety. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of these parts and how they are made.

Benefits of Precision Metal Parts

Improved Safety

Precision metal parts are manufactured using CNC machining, which is a highly precise manufacturing process. Since your parts will be produced with the highest precision and accuracy, your precision parts will meet the tightest of tolerances, increasing the safety of your final product or piece of equipment.

Improved Efficiency

These parts are created to the exact specifications discussed when we take on the project and we follow your design throughout the entire process. During the production process, we ensure your parts are meeting all of the requirements of your industry, improving the functionality and efficiency of your equipment.

Cost-Savings

The process of CNC machining, which is used to create precision metal parts, is a very cost-effective manufacturing process. The machines used during CNC machining cut down on the need for human labor, allowing them to run faster and for longer. This yields more parts per hour while also reducing human error in products, resulting in a reduction in the need to reproduce damaged or deformed products.

Design Flexibility

Since CNC machines are programmed to produce the products that are designed by our customers and they have more capabilities than manual processes, they are capable of product parts with extremely complex geometries and tight tolerances with ease.

How Precision Metal Parts Are Made

CNC Milling

During the CNC milling process, the work material is mounted and a rotating tool is used to cut away at the work material, creating the desired part. There are 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milling processes, each used to create different products.

  • 3-Axis Milling: During this process, the cutting tools move along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes to shape the part as it moves. 3-axis milling is commonly used to cut sharp edges, drill holes, and perform boring and taping operations.
  • 4-Axis Milling: Tools remove material along the X-, Y-, Z-, and A-axes to cut holes, cut along arcs, carve cut-outs on cylinders, and perform precision engraving, milling, and drilling.
  • 5-Axis Milling: During this milling process, the tool moves in two different directions. It moves along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes and rotates along the A- and C-axes to create highly precise metal parts.

Turning

During the turning processes, the workpiece is mounted and rotated while stationary tools remove parts of the material to create the desired precision part. At Garland Service Company, we offer both Swiss lathing and CNC lathing processes.

  • CNC Lathe: This process is significantly more accurate than manual or conventional lathes, so it is ideal for creating metal parts that have complex designs.
  • Swiss Lathe: During this method, a collet and guide bushing hold the workpiece in place as it is turned, making it extremely secure. This ensures that the workpiece doesn’t vibrate during manufacturing, allowing thinner parts with intricate designs to be created.
