Applications of High Precision Machining

High precision machining is used when the parts’ characteristics and features are so difficult that they may not be machinable because they violate the laws of physics. Due to the difficulty of making complex machined parts, not all firms that offer machining services are capable of delivering these parts on spec and on time. For the same reasons, it is also difficult to make large quantities of these complex machined parts. 

High precision machining is a form of fabrication that allows the customer to design a custom part with characteristics and features that are only limited by the laws of physics. Let’s explore some of the applications of high precision machining.

The Process of High Precision Machining 

CNC Milling

The process of CNC milling uses rotary cutters to remove material from the workpiece. There are three types of CNC milling used: 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milling. 

  • 3-Axis CNC Milling: This process removes material via the X, Y, and Z axes. It is the most popular CNC milling method thanks to its low start-up costs, however, it is usually only chosen for simple parts that have uncomplicated geometries. 
  • 4-Axis CNC Milling: This milling method removes material from the same axes as 3-Axis CNC Milling, however, it can also remove material from the A axis. Manufacturers commonly choose this method when they need to cut around a cylinder or cut the side of the piece. 
  • 5-Axis CNC Milling: This process is used to remove material from the workpiece along the three linear axes, the machine head, and the tool head. This is commonly used to manufacture parts with complex geometries while removing the need for multiple setups, making it faster and more productive. 

CNC Turning

During the CNC turning process, the workpiece is rotated along a central axis while a linearly moving cutting tool removes material from the piece. This process is typically used on cylindrical parts where the diameter is reduced to the desired dimensions. It can be done along one, two, three, or more axes of motion to achieve precise detailing. CNC turning is also commonly used to perform secondary operations such as drilling or tapping.
